When travelling on boat or gondola on the Canal Grande, you will see at a certain moment a building that is different from the other ones. We are talking of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, where the Guggenheim collection is hosted. The Guggenheim Collection Venice has a long story to tell, about the collection and about the pioneer of the Collection, Peggy Guggenheim.
The Guggenheim collection Venice at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni
The difference among the other buildings stays in the highness of the building, which is visibly shorter from the rest of buildings. The reason stays in the fact that Palazzo Venier dei Leoni seems to be unfinished: in fact it had to have another floor, instead of the ground floor that it actually has. Why does? The reason is unclear, maybe the funds for the building of the Guggenheim Collection in Venice came to an end when the work was unfinished, or probably the rich family living in front of the palace were not agree about the construction of a building that had to be higher that theirs. The other interesting side about this museum, in addition of course to the splendid works that it contains, is the story of the founder of the Guggenheim collection Venice, Peggy Guggenheim. She was born in USA at the end of 19th century, and from the very beginning of her career she was fond of art, especially contemporary art. Than she moved to Europe where she met important people and intellectuals of those years. In London she founded her first gallery, where she exposed works of Jean Cocteau and Vasily Kandinsky. In 1948 she bought Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which she chose also as her residence. She moved here her whole collection, which includes some of the most important artists of the 20th century, as Picasso, de Chirico, Dalì and Pollock.
